The robotics revolution in China has shown no signs of slowing down recently. The country is rapidly expanding its capabilities in building humanoid robots, presenting a crystal-clear picture of the future.
However, this is still the nascent stage for humanoid robots until we get the full idea of how well they perform. And, in the meanwhile, social media is flooding with a plethora of epic fails about humanoid robots that usually end up bringing a smile to your face.
Something similar happened at a sports event in Hangzhou, China.
A moment of laughter
The audience at the ZheBA sports event in Hangzhou was treated to an epic, funny showdown of two humanoids on a basketball court. The robots made human-like movements, throwing kicks and punches in the air.
One of the humanoids pulled out a 360-degree spin as the crowd watched in awe. They also moved around deftly, showing their alertness, just like humans do while boxing.
And, in those moments, one of the humanoids tripped and fell flat on its face, causing a hilarious uproar from the crowd. While the moment turned funny, seeing the humanoid get his act together and stand up again was worth appreciating.
The capabilities of humanoid robots
Humanoid robots boxing each other isn’t exactly a new scenario to behold. Two humanoids developed by Unitree Robotics recently made headlines by fighting in a kickboxing match in Hangzhou. Both robots were shown throwing fluid punches in the ring, showcasing their human-like actions.
Elsewhere, China also witnessed the first-ever football tournament featuring only robots. The RoBoLeague entertained an enthralled audience with thrilling goals, dribbles, stumbles, and dramatic calls over “injuries”.
In a surprising event, a humanoid robot named Shuang Shuang also appeared to collect a graduate degree by walking on stage in a convocation ceremony. His life-like, polite gestures had the students gawk at him in awe.
However, exciting developments aren’t the only things that should have your attention. While there’s no second doubt regarding how humanoids can improve human quality of life, impending dangers must be addressed.
For instance, engineers at a factory must tackle a humanoid posing an impending danger. In another such shocking turn of events, a humanoid robot attacked the crowd at the China festival and had to be dragged away by the police.
A take on the future
As China continues to push the boundaries of robotics innovation, the line between science fiction and reality grows thinner. These humanoid robots, while often sources of amusement due to their awkward missteps, are powerful symbols of technological progress.
They demonstrate how far we’ve come and how much more must be perfected. With each tumble and recovery, these machines offer valuable data that engineers can use to improve their stability, response time, and human interaction capabilities.
Still, the dual nature of this progress—both entertaining and slightly alarming—reminds us that the future of robotics must be handled with responsibility and care.
